The Dos and Don'ts of Couponing
  • Drink water. With the heat index rising, it's more crucial than any other time of year to stay hydrated. And since sodas and sugary juices can actually have the opposite effect, it's a good idea to stick to good ol' H20. Not only will you save money, but you'll feel better too. But if you really have a craving for something sweet, try making your own lemonade or sports drink. (Mix unsweetened Kool-Aid with a half cup sugar, half teaspoon salt, and two liters of water.)
  • Buy less food. Studies show that we tend to eat less in the summer. This is probably because during the winter months we spend more time inside and at home, which just leads to more snacking. Likewise, we tend to be more body conscious in the summer when the attire calls for bathing suits and shorts. Whatever the reason may be, it's a good idea to adjust your food shopping accordingly so you aren't wasting money and food.
  • Go with the season. When stocking up on produce, stick with what is in season. It will be cheaper, fresher, and it will definitely taste better. Summer produce includes cherries, blueberries, tomatoes, peaches, and green beans.
  • Make your own snacks. Popsicles and ice cream make the perfect summertime treat. But instead of buying them at the grocery store, considering making your own using some of that fresh summer produce. It will taste great, plus it gives you an activity to do with the kids. Try this refreshing strawberry lemonade popsicle recipe: Puree a half pint of strawberries (add honey for taste), and pour into a popsicle mold, filling it halfway. Freeze for a few hours, then fill the rest of the way with lemonade and freeze overnight.
  • Clip coupons. Most grocery stores offer multiple summer specials, so keep an eye out at your local store and circulars for can't-miss deals. Also check CoolSavings for printable coupons to stack with those in-store specials for double the savings. This is a time of year when businesses tend to be slower, so there's a good chance you'll score some sizzling hot deals!
